Tooth Abscess also known as periapical abscess, tooth abscess, tooth infection, is a painful infection in the root of a tooth, or between the gum and tooth. It is caused by more serious tooth decay. Other causes of tooth abscess are trauma to the tooth, and when it breaks or chips, and gum disease or gingivitis.
These problems can cause openings in the tooth enamel, allowing bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (pulp of the call). The infection can also spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the teeth.
What are the symptoms of tooth abscess?
A toothache that is severe and continuous and results in gnawing or throbbing pain or sharp or stabbing pain are common symptoms of an abscessed tooth. Other symptoms may include:
* Fever
* Pain when chewing
* The teeth sensitivity to cold or hot
* Bitter taste in mouth
* Bad breath
* Swollen glands in neck
* General discomfort, uneasiness, or malaise
* Redness and swelling of the gums
* Swelling of the area of the upper or lower jaw
* An open, draining sore on the side of chewing gum
Tooth Abscess
If the root of the tooth dies from infection, the toothache may stop. However, this does not mean the infection has been cured, the infection remains active and continues to spread and destroy tissue. Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a dentist, even if the pain subsides.
Tooth Abscessed Diagnosis
Your dentist will probe your teeth with a dental instrument. If you have an abscessed tooth, you feel pain when the tooth is tapped by your dentist \ ’s probe. Your dentist will also ask if the pain increases when you bite or mouth tightly shut. In addition, your dentist may suspect an abscessed tooth because the gums may be swollen and red.
Your dentist may also take x-rays to look for bone erosion around the abscess.
Tooth Abscess Treatment
Strategies to eliminate the infection, preserve the tooth and prevent complications are the goals of treatment.
To eliminate the infection, the abscess may need to be drained. Achieving drainage may be done through the teeth through a procedure known as a root canal. Root may also be recommended surgery to remove diseased tissue root after the infection has decreased. Then, a crown may be placed on the tooth.
The tooth may be extracted, allowing drainage through the socket.
Finally, a third way to drain the abscess would be by incision into the swollen gum tissue.
Antibiotics are prescribed to help fight infection. To relieve pain and discomfort associated with an abscessed tooth, warm salt water rinses and pain reducing medications like ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can be used.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
